Fire Prevention
Matt Pickett (FM-1) serves as the Fire Investigator for the Department. Understanding the causes of fires, whether they occur because of human error, a design fault, an act of nature, or malicious intent, besides being required by law, helps prevent fires in the future. Fire suppression officers often call in the investigator to help determine the origin and cause of a fire and to follow up with the investigation, if necessary. The fire investigator often works closely with law enforcement officers and other investigative resources, such as the State Fire Marshall’s Office and private investigation firms. Inspector Pickett also handles all background investigations of new hire candidates for the Department.
Eric Habegger (FM-2) focuses on public fire safety education. These activities are aimed at preventing problems before they occur by making people aware of hazardous situations and potentially dangerous acts. Eric develops and presents fire safety programs in schools, businesses, churches, and retirement centers, and is active in career exploration programs through Millstream Vocational School and the Boy Scouts, as well as performing fire safety inspections throughout the City.
Code enforcement is the primary area of concern for Inspector Jim Holmes (FM-3). Jim continues working closely with the City Planning Commission, and becoming more involved in construction plans review. With the large amount of construction occurring in the City of Findlay, this can become a very demanding and time-consuming undertaking. Jim balances his plan review activities with the fire safety inspections and overseeing tests of fire suppression and detection systems.
