Why does the Water Distribution Department flush fire hydrants?

Fire hydrants are flushed once or twice a year usually in the spring and or the fall.

Hydrants are flushed to:

  1. Clean out the iron deposits and other settlements that form on the side of the water lines.
  2. Allow routine maintenance of every hydrant.
  3. Identify hydrants in need of repair.
  4. Determine the volume of water available at each hydrant for fighting a fire.
  5. Provide important information for fire pre-planning.
