Why should I be concerned about improper downspout and sump pump connections at my home? | City of Findlay, Ohio

Why should I be concerned about improper downspout and sump pump connections at my home?

If downspouts are connected into the sanitary sewer then they add stormwater into the sanitary sewer system. Stormwater does not need to be treated at the Water Pollution Control Center. This increases our costs to operate the Water Pollution Control Center. These costs are ultimately born by the citizens of Findlay.

In addition, the sanitary sewer system is not designed to handle this excessive amount of water.  This stormwater surge which increases the risk of surcharging our sanitary sewer systems whcih can result in water backing into basements or causing combined sewer overflows into the receiving streams.

Eliminating improperly connect downspouts will help to decrease system surcharging and decrease the amount of flow that needs to be treated at the Water Pollution Control Center thus helping to lower costs.

Please contact the Water Pollution Control Center @ 419-424-7187 if you would like to have your downspouts and sump pump connections checked. This service is provided to the homeowner at no cost.
