Type of Incident: Felonious Assault

Date & Time of Incident: December 16, 2017 @ 2:38 a.m.

Location of Incident: Walnut Saloon, 335 Walnut St.

Brief Description: 

Findlay Police was called to the parking lot of the Walnut Saloon, 335 Walnut Street, on the report of two men who had been assaulted. Officers found Gregory Hammer, age 53, unconscious on the ground with injuries to his head. Gregory’s brother, Darryl Hammer, age 47, was also located in the lot with injuries to his face.

Darryl reported that the two were assaulted in the parking lot by multiple males. The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. Gregory was transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital for treatment and he was later transferred to St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo by Lifeflight helicopter. Gregory remains in the care of St. Vincent Medical Center. Darryl was treated and released from Blanchard Valley Hospital. Both men reside in Findlay.

Police continue to investigate the incident and no arrests have been made. A motive is unknown.

Update – January 3, 2018 @ 15:00

Gregory Hammer died on December 31, 2018. An autopsy was performed on January 2, 2018 at the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.  Hammer had been in St. Vincent Medical Center since the incident occurred.

Police continue to investigate the case and no arrest has been made.  A person of interest has been identified and police are looking to speak with that individual.  The case is expected to be presented to the Hancock County Grand Jury in the coming weeks.
